Ten years after its first edition, the Marranzano World Festival continues its biennial journey of research on musical instruments from folk traditions, starting from Sicily and reaching out to the cultures of distant peoples. The marranzano is not only one of the main objects of this research, as a musical instrument that encapsulates millennia of material and immaterial musical culture, but above all, it is the ideal metaphor for everything that is typically Sicilian but at the same time widespread worldwide, for everything that has ancient roots but extends towards the future. After covering in its biennial history all instrumental categories (idiophones, membranophones, aerophones, chordophones, and voice), this tenth-anniversary edition focuses on new inventions in the world of acoustic musical instruments and innovative approaches to traditional vocal techniques. The investigation into the concept of “boundaries” is therefore at the center of this edition, hosted in the splendid setting of Parco Horcynus Orca, poised between land and sea against the backdrop of the Strait of Messina, but with an important preview at the venue where the festival was born, the Monastero dei Benedettini in Catania.
As in every edition, the festival program combines moments of scientific exploration with more playful and informative initiatives. From the round table discussions that explore new technologies for the representation, preservation, and dissemination of traditional knowledge to folk parties centered around traditional dances. From the photographic exhibition on the construction of the marranzano in Sicily to practical music workshops on traditional techniques. From concerts featuring prominent Sicilian and international artists to the craft instrument market and in-depth discussions with guest artists.
