The Marranzano World Festival is a biennial event that celebrates the marranzano as a metaphor for everything typically Sicilian yet widespread throughout the world, for everything with ancient roots but reaching towards the future. It is a multidisciplinary event aimed at promoting the idea of Sicily as a land of music, fostering generational exchange and a culture of tolerance and cooperation. Musical instruments serve as a sonic bridge between the local and the global, ancient traditions and new experiments. The festival aims to rediscover Sicilian musical and artisanal traditions through interaction with distant cultures.
Starting from the first edition in 2005, entirely dedicated to the Jew’s harp and throat singing, each edition has focused on a type of musical instrument that, while representing Sicilian musical and artisanal tradition, can also claim connections to instruments and traditions from distant countries and cultures. This includes the tamburello and frame drums in 2007, and the bagpipe and continuous wind aerophones in 2009. The fourth edition, presented in 2012, was dedicated to plucked string instruments, aiming to narrate the long history connecting the Sicilian mandolin with the Iranian setar, the Arab oud, the African kora, and many other plucked string instruments along the Silk Road and beyond.
In all editions, amidst musical instrument exhibitions, conferences, workshops, screenings, parties, and concerts, there has always been, of course, a space dedicated to the marranzano in Sicily and to Jew’s harps worldwide. This has made the Marranzano World Festival a regular event for enthusiasts of this instrument in Italy and abroad, significantly contributing to the renewed attention of musicians and builders to the possibilities of this small yet vibrant-spirited instrument.
